Adventures In Garage Sale Hunting
What's more fun, the garage sale or the hunt for the sale when we find ourselves with an insatiable hunger to go out and find stuff? For sure, humans (being the cheapskates at heart they really are) would say that the sale itself is the most fun but it's probably the case that the actual hunt is most enjoyable above all else. We've convinced ourselves, after all, that we need more stuff and were going to get it anyway we can.
Today, it's a fact that the garage sale industry has turned such activities into events that we now look at as being similar to watching the grand old game of baseball, that's how much of a national pastime it's become. And though buying more and more stuff at a garage sale is certainly something that will occur, searching out the right sale for the right digital sport watch can be like searching for El Dorado, some would say.
What, then, can one say about cruising the local neighborhoods endlessly on a Saturday afternoon looking for signs of a garage sale, such as a badly Xeroxed ad tacked onto a telephone pole? Apparently, not much but we do it anyway, all in the expectation of finding little Billy an electric guitar for sale at a garage sale held by two little old ladies selling lace doilies and tea cozies, right?
The guitar advertised for sale probably went long ago and those doilies are the only things left, so a box of them probably will end up in the basement or the attic because everybody knows a garage sale in which nothing was bought is like an African safari in which not even a lonely and forlorn gazelle happened to be spotted. And, truly, hunting for a garage sale is kind of like going out on a safari in many respects.
Perhaps one is going on safari -- we mean 'hunting for a garage sale' -- to find some fitness equipment. Now, never mind that we once paid thousands of dollars for a gym membership that quickly fell into disuse when we found out that working out in a gym actually caused sweat. No, what we've convinced ourselves of is that the equipment for sale at some garage get-together will look perfect in the new fitness room were going to build. Maybe.
The reality of things, though, is that we really might not find much of true worth when we go out on these hunts but it's still a vicarious pleasure we find in the hunting. We might turn up a case of old 33 RPM record albums (even though we don't have a stereo phonograph) and we have to have it. Besides, those albums might be of bands that we once danced to way back in high school.
At heart, it really matters little whether we find anything that we actually need at a garage sale. Instead, what really matters is that we're out there looking for our own 'Treasure of the Sierra Madre, ' and we go to great lengths to find that treasure. Usually, it's been looted long ago and we normally find that what we're left holding is not much. But it certainly thrills us with the adventure, right?
